Well you can tell by the date on the calendar that duck season is fastly approaching. The statewide duckblind drawings will be held this coming weekend at various locations around the state. This is a great opportunity for the area hunters to obtain a duckblind for the upcoming season. Remember if you get drawn for a blind to be sure and cut any brush prior to the first frost. This will assure you the best coverage by its plumage.
It's HOT...It's REALLY HOT!!! To say that the fishing is in the dumps would be an understatement. After the many hot and humid days that we have experienced on Reelfoot, the fishing has really slowed down. The only really decent reports have come from the bass fishermen and catfishers. If you get out really early in the day and fish some type of surface lure, you can usually coax a big ol' bucketmouth to stretch your line. Good places to start would be the scattered cypress trees in deeper water, the edges of the big lily-pad pads next to deeper water, and any submerged logs/stumps in deeper water...catch the trend? Deeper water.
The crappie have gone to the normal summer haunts of the "deeper water" areas of the southern end of the lake. Only decent catches have been reported coming out of the Catfish Channel, Osprey Nest, and Rose Garden areas. The bait of choice has been a minnow fished in the 10-15 foot waters very slowly. It also is important to be on the water by daybreak so not only you can stand the heat, but also stand a chance to catch some of these wily crappie chasing shad or minnows. Be sure and drink plenty of water while fishing during these hot days and wear a long sleeved, light colored shirt, and sunscreen.
Keep checking back for more fishing reports. With the falling water level on the lake, it looks like we will be jigging stumps in the near future. Be sure to "LIKE" us on Facebook and check out our Youtube channel for upcoming videos while we are fishing.
